About Us

Aultman's Family Medicine Residency Program is designed to train the family physician of the future through a diverse and well-coordinated educational program.

A Wide Variety of Family Medicine Opportunities
Whether your interest is rural medicine, sports medicine, or geriatric medicine, Aultman's Family Medicine Residency Program offers a specialized training area for you. Resident training facilities include the Family Medicine Center of Aultman Hospital, the Waynesburg and Hills & Dales Centers, McKinley Health Care Center and Aultman Woodlawn - as well as several private-practice based settings.

Community Involvement
Aultman Family Medicine Residency is committed to providing care for all members of the community. The faculty participates in the provision of care at various community sites. Residents select from the following or may arrange a different experience based on their personal interests.

Hartville Migrant Clinic (Hartville Migrant Ministry Website)

Planned Parenthood of Stark County

Stark County Health Department Obstetrics Clinic

Carroll County Health Department Women's Clinic

Shipley Child Health Clinic

Rural Medicine
For those who are interested in training for practice in a rural area, we offer a special experience in rural medicine. Canton is not far from many rural Ohio communities. This provides an opportunity for interested residents to select an "apprenticeship-like" program in a rural practice site, working with populations such as migrant farm workers and the Amish.

Sports Medicine
Canton has a rich sports heritage, and we have the unique achievement of having several of our graduating residents accepted into sports medicine fellowships. Experiences are available to work as team physicians as well as with certified Sports Medicine doctors.

Geriatric Medicine
Geriatric training is provided at McKinley Health Care, a 240-bed, extended-care facility. Our residents and faculty are the staff physicians for this facility, which provides valuable clinical experience in managing chronic disease in the elderly.

Transitional Care/Rehabilitation
You will receive PT/OT training at Aultman Woodlawn Transitional Care Unit/Rehabilitation (TCU), a 60-bed skilled nursing facility.

Family Medicine Center at Aultman
We believe the strength of your education in family medicine lies in your experiences in the ambulatory site. The Family Medicine Center of Aultman serves a growing patient panel of varied socioeconomic backgrounds. This assures you experience in managing a wide variety of medical and psychosocial problems. You will follow a panel of patients that will grow from 50 families in your first year to 150 families in your third year. The Family Medicine Center is connected to Aultman Hospital. This center is comprised of 17 well-equipped exam rooms, one treatment room, a conference room, library, and an audiovisual center with videotaping.

Your training will include dermatologic procedures, joint injection/aspiration, IUD insertion, colposcopy, as well as other minor procedures.

In-Depth Training in the Hospital Environment
You will also be prepared for the practice of Family Medicine through our strong inpatient teaching services. Each of Aultman's residency programs complements the others and increases the clinical expertise we offer in the various areas of training. You will complete your residency competent to handle medical emergencies, obstetrics and patients in the intensive care setting.

Focused on Your Professional and Personal Well-Being
We never lose sight of the importance of our residents' professional and personal well-being. You will receive regular individualized feedback and have the opportunity to give your input during faculty advising sessions. There is a Resident Wellness Conference Series in place, which addresses issues such as taking care of your own physical, intellectual and emotional health. We also provide the opportunity to tailor your curriculum to meet your professional goals.

Osteopathic Opportunities
Our dually accredited program is one of a select few residencies offering certification by both the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Our osteopathic program is proudly affiliated with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and parallels our allopathic program with additional osteopathic manipulation, principals and practice. Our osteopathic curriculum offers opportunities for OMT electives, inpatient teaching and lectures with practical application.

Research Opportunities
Our program offers opportunity for research including individual research projects and presentations at both the NEOUCOM Senior Research Day and Aultman Research Day.  Residents are encouraged to submit their research to and present at local, state and nationals allopathic and osteopathic conferences.
